Een hele week bij prachtig weer kunnen vissen in ons noordelijke gebied, deel Doggerbank tot aan Aberdeen. We hebben daar zo goed als alles kunnen doen en zijn nu weer overgestoken naar het zuidelijke gebied voor de laatste paar dagen. Ook in het noorden werden de vangsten vooral gedomineerd door haring en sprot. Maar we hebben ook heel veel jonge schelvis gevangen. Een van de trekken bestond voornamelijk uit ansjovis, welke ook aanwezig waren in een groot aantal van de andere trekken, dit was veel meer ansjovis dan ik de afgelopen jaren heb gezien.

Been fishing with great weather in our northern area, Doggerbank up to Aberdeen. We were able to do almost all our tows there, and currently we are back in the southern area for our last few days. Also in the North the catches were dominated by sprat and herring, but we also have seen a lot of young haddock. One of the tows was dominated by anchovy, which were present in a larger number of tows, this was much more anchovy than I have seen in the last years.

We zijn niet de enige die bezig zijn met de survey, ook een aantal van de andere landen grenzend aan de Noordzee doen mee aan de IBTS. Tijdens de survey houden we elkaar op de hoogte over waar er gevist is en ook delen we de voorlopige aantallen gevangen jonge/kleine vis. Dit jaar zijn de weersomstandigheden tot nu toe goed, waardoor er weinig coördinatie nodig is en we voor de volledige survey op koers liggen om het aantal geplande trekken te gaan uit voeren.  

We are not alone doing the survey, also most of the other countries bordering the North Sea participate in the IBTS. During the survey we keep each other updated about where we have fished and the amount of young/small fish we have caught. This year the weather conditions are fine up to now, therefore limited coordination is needed and we are on track of covering the total amount of planned tows.

Een weekend voorbij

Het hele weekend bij goed weer door gevist en al vissend en MIKkend een rondje Helgoland gedaan. We hebben ons deel in de Duitse Bocht kunnen uitvoeren alleen werd afgelopen nacht het weer slechter en moesten we stoppen met het de MIK. Gelukkig konden we vanochtend wel weer vissen en voorlopig is het nog twijfelachtig of we vanavond kunnen gaan MIKken.

Worked the whole weekend with good weather and we have made a tour around Helgoland while fishing and MIKking. We were able to do our part in the German Bight up to last night when the weather conditions made it impossible to do the MIK. Luckily we were able to fish this morning and the weather at the moment is still good for fishing but a bit doubtful for doing the MIK.

Als de vangst binnen is sorteren we deze en normaal aan boord van de Tridens zijn wij verwend met een lopende band die de vangst voor ons transporteert. Hier moeten we het echter allemaal met de hand doen en ook nog eens op het dek. Als verwende kinderen klagen we de gehele dag tijdens het sorteren over de snelheid waarmee het gaat en over iedere windvlaag en golf die voorbij komt. Uiteraard allemaal met een glimlach, want ondanks dat het wat aanpassingen vergt aan de routines is het met de huidige vangsten nog goed te doen.

 

When the fish comes in we sort this and normally on board of the Tridens we are spoiled with a conveyor belt that transports the catch for us. Here, we have to do everything by hand and on the deck. So as a couple of spoiled kids we are nagging about this the whole time: about the speed of doing it by hand and about the cold that is caused by each gust of wind or wave that passes by. Of course this all happens with a smile, as despite the fact that it costs some effort to adjust our routines, it is all working fine with the current catches.

De huidige vangsten bestaan voornamelijk uit haring en sprot, welke goed zijn door te schuiven met de hand. Verder wordt er met name schar gevangen. Maar ook de eerste haaien en roggen zijn al weer gevangen en gemerkt (zie blog vorig jaar). En de meest opvallende vangsten tot nu toe waren drie zeepaddestoelen en een groot vrachtwagen zeildoek (ja, ook marine afval wordt geregistreerd).

The current catches are dominated by herring and sprat, which we can handle easily on the sorting table. Next to these two species, we catch mainly dab. But also the first sharks and rays have been caught (see last years blog). The most striking catches so far were three barrel jellyfish and a trucks canvas (Yes, we also record marine litter).

De samenwerking met de Engelsen verloopt voorspoedig en sommige worden zelfs al grote vrienden, vooral met de kok want lekker eten is in alle talen hetzelfde.

The cooperation with the English is going very well and some are even becoming big friends already, especially with the cook, because delicious food is the same in all languages.

Begonnen !!!!!

Bij deze de eerste blog vanaf de Endeavour zelf. Met wat vertraging zijn we gisteren middag vertrokken vanuit Scheveningen. Dit werd vooraf gegaan door een uitgebreide veiligheidsoefening (zie foto). En ondanks dat ze aan boord van een Engels schip vreemd genoeg Engels spreken, zich aan de Engelse tijd houden, Engelse thee drinken en Engelse stopcontacten hebben, is het in de middag nog gelukt de eerste vis trek voor de kust van Scheveningen uit te voeren.

The first blog from the Endeavour. After some delay, we left Scheveningen yesterday afternoon. Departure was preceded by an extensive safety drill (see picture). Despite the fact that on an English vessel they surprisingly speak English, live by the English time, drink English tea and have English electrical outlets, we succeeded in executing the first fishing tow in front of the Scheveningen coast.

 Zoals verwacht een niet al te grote vangst om er een beetje in te komen, met een aardige hoeveelheid kleine wijting. Het is echter al vroeg donker en een tweede vis trek zat er niet meer in. Als het donker is vissen we met het MIK-net op haring larven. Het larven vissen leverde wat meer problemen op dan het vissen met de GOV, dit was echter te verwachten omdat de Engelsen niet gewend zijn deze bemonstering uit te voeren. Ondanks de opstart problemen, is het gelukt om ’s nachts 7 MIK-trekken uit te voeren en afgelopen middag zijn de eerste larven en eieren al weer uitgezocht.

As expected a not too large catch to get familiar with the way everything operates. The catch consisted of a nice amount of small whiting. Unfortunately darkness falls early and therefore it was not possible to do another fish catch. When it is dark we start with the MIK, e.g. fishing for herring larvae. Fishing for larvae gave more difficulties than starting the day activities, however this was anticipated as the English are not used to this type of sampling. Despite the starting problems, we succeeded in 7 MIK-tows during the night and the first samples were already sorted this afternoon.

Vandaag goed kunnen vissen en kunnen wennen aan de manier van vis verwerken. In het begin van de dag was het in het zonnetje heerlijk vis uitzoeken aan dek met prachtig uitzicht op de Nederlandse windmolenparken op zee. Waar we nog niet zo lang geleden nog onderzoek hebben uitgevoerd. Later op de dag in de sneeuw werd het toch best fris om op het dek de aardige hoeveelheden kleine haring en sprot te sorteren.

At the start it was lovely to work on the deck in the sun with the beautiful view on the Dutch wind farms. Later on the day it became chilly on the deck while sorting reasonably large amounts of small herring and sprat.     

 

IBTS 2015

Welkom opnieuw!!
Ook in 2015 gaan wij als IMARES enthousiast aan de slag om onze kennis over de Noordzee visgemeenschap te vergroten door deel te nemen aan de International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS).

Tot onze grote spijt, moet we het dit jaar doen zonder onze belangrijkste metgezellin, de Tridens. Zij wordt op dit moment verbouwt en komt helaas pas na de IBTS weer in de vaart. Maar zal dan niet alleen opgefrist zijn, maar uitgebreid zodat we nog beter akoestisch onderzoek kunnen uitvoeren. Voor ons echter te laat en daarom zoeken wij dit jaar ons toevlucht aan boord van het Engelse schip de CEFAS Endeavour. Hierdoor is er voor onszelf heel veel anders, maar de te verzamelen gegevens zijn te vergelijken met eerdere jaren.

Doordat we gebruik maken van het Engelse schip zal het ploegje van IMARES maar uit 4 personen bestaan. Gelukkig gaan er nog 4 bemanningsleden van de Tridens mee, en zijn er naast de bemanning van de Endeavour ook nog 2 onderzoekers van CEFAS aanboord om ons wegwijs te maken.

Als de weergoden ons goed gezind zijn en ons zegenen met een gunstig wind komt de Endeavour op 27 januari onze kant op en kunnen wij net als andere jaren in Scheveningen aan boord gaan en vanuit daar vertrekken. Om dan  half februari weer terug te keren in Scheveningen.

Jullie kunnen nu via een van de tab bladen de Endeavour al volgen, maar zo snel wij zijn vertrokken zal ik jullie hier niet alleen op de hoogte houden van onze vangsten, maar o.a. ook van onze aanpassingsproblemen aan boord van het voor ons nieuwe schip.

De planning is om in alle kwadranten met NL overdag 1 vistrek en 's nachts 2 trekken voor haringlarven uit te voeren.

Welcome again!!

Also in 2015 IMARES will start with a lot of enthusiasm to extend our knowledge on the North Sea fish community by participating on the International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS).

However, to our regret we will have to do it this year without our most important companion, de Tridens. She is being refitted and will be back in operation after the IBTS. But then she will be as good as new including a lot of fancy acoustic equipment. For us that is too late and we will be able to use the English vessel the CEFAS Endeavour. Because of this a lot of things will be different for us, but the data we will collect will be comparable with earlier years.

Because we use the English vessel the IMARES crew is small and only exists of four persons. Luckily we will be accompanied by 4 Tridens crew members and next to the regular crew of the Endeavour two CEFAS researchers will help us on board.

If the gods of weather will be with us, and they will bless us with favourable wind conditions the Endeavour will arrive on 27 January in Scheveningen and as soon as all our stuff is on board we will leave from their for the IBTS Q1 2015. The planning is that we will be back in Scheveningen half of February.
