IBTS 2021 Q1 Voorbereiding II/ Preparation II

Overdag gebruiken we het vistuig, maar ook 's nachts gaan we aan het werk en dan gebruiken we het fijnmazige MIK-net (500 µm) om vislarven te vangen. Ook dit net is voor aanvang van de survey in orde gemaakt en hangt klaar om tijdens de eerste nacht ingezet te gaan worden. De voorbereidingen voor het MIK-net beslaan wat meer dan alleen het correct ophangen van het net. Op de buitenkant van de MIK-ring wordt een MIKey-netje (200 µm) bevestigd, in beide netten wordt een elektronische flowmeter gemonteerd welke via de vislijn de informatie doorgeeft naar de computer in het lab aan boord. Ook wordt er in het midden van het net een Seabird-CTD gemonteerd, ook deze geeft het de informatie via de vislijn door naar het lab. Met de flowmeter kunnen we bepalen hoeveel water er door het net heen is gegaan (e.g. langs de flowmeter) en de CTD geeft informatie over de positie van het MIK-net in het water, daarnaast registreert de CTD continue de temperatuur en de conductiviteit (maat voor de saliniteit van het water). 

During the day we use the fishing gear, but we also go to work at night and then we use the fine-meshed MIK net (500 µm) to catch fish larvae. This net was also prepared before the start of the survey and is ready to be deployed during the first night. The preparations for the MIK net cover a bit more than just hanging the net correctly. A MIKey net (200 µm) is attached to the outside of the MIK ring, and an electronic flow meter is mounted in both nets, these flow meters  transmits the information via the fishing line to the computer in the lab on board. A Seabird-CTD is also mounted in the middle of the net, and also transmits the information via the fishing line to the lab. With the flow meter we can determine how much water has passed through the network (eg along the flow meter) and the CTD provides information about the position of the MIK network in the water, in addition, the CTD continuously registers the temperature and conductivity (measure for the salinity of the water).

Nieuw dit jaar in de voorbereiding was een COVID-sneltest voor het aan boord gaan. Gelukkig was iedereen negatief en mag dus iedereen deze week mee. We konden na de testen beginnen met de veiligheidsrondes en veiligheidsoefeningen. Zo zijn de brandpakken getest en is de nieuwe Man-Over-Boord-boot getest. En daarna konden we dan ook echt vertrekken!!

New this year in the preparation was a COVID-rapid test before boarding. Fortunately everyone was negative and so everyone can come this week. After the tests we could start with the safety rounds and safety drills. For example, the fire suits have been tested and the new Man-Over-Board boat has been tested. And then we could really leave !!
